Meet Cal! A little bit about Cal in his own words:
Hi, I’m Cal! I’m originally from Washington, DC, and moved to Seattle five years ago for my partner’s surgery residency at UW. I work in clean energy consulting, finding ways to get more electric cars on the road. I love cycling, sandwiches, and breweries, all things Seattle provides ample opportunities for. One fun fact: my first job in high school was leading Segway tours of the sites in DC.

How long have you been a member of GLSC?
I joined in June 2023, after seeing my old landlord and former coach Russ post about his classes on Instagram.

How has being a part of the gym benefitted you?
In so many ways! I sit at a computer all day, many days by myself, so the gym gives me a needed outlet to get moving and be social. Before joining GLSC, I found myself in a frustrating cycle of exercise, injury, and then extended inactivity. Building functional strength has allowed me to do a lot more while avoiding injury. And I’ve made some great gym buddies at the same time.

What is your favorite movement or workout?
I’ve grown to love the power clean over the last few months. For me, it’s a great combination of strength, skill, and mental challenge, and when they are mixed into a WOD, they’ll keep your heart-rate on high.

What is your favorite music or pump up song?
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but one day last summer Zeyab put on a playlist that started with “Say You’ll Be There” from the Spice Girls’ debut 1996 album. I don’t know if I’d heard that song in 25+ years (shout out to my sister), but when that beat and synth line dropped, it went extremely hard. I don’t think I’ve ever rowed that hard since.
